Her Brain, Designed to Nurture
By Walt and Barb Larimore Even among children ages twelve months to twenty months, exposure to the distress of other people causes girls to respond with more empathy and less indifference than boys. These differences only increase as girls grow older. School-age girls try to reduce conflict. Her brain wants to network and nurture; his brain wants to clash and combat. And after puberty when the soothing effects of estrogen are fully available, there is an even more marked increase in the female preference for cooperation. It is important to realize that nurturing has a remarkably positive effect on women. Being able to nurture children in the home is even associated with better health for women. It's not social conditioning that explains the unadulterated joy and satisfaction a woman gains in nurturing - it's designed into her brain!
