Why Men Need To Sit Down At The Shopping Mall
By John Gray
Another example of how women are energized by increasing oxytocin and and men are not comes from my experiences in shopping malls.
When men shop, they tend to be very goal-oriented. If they go in for pants, they try to get out with pants in the shortest amount of time. If their objective is to find pants, they don't even think about getting matching shirts and shoes.
This focused approach is very stimulating of testosterone.
Women may go shopping for one thing, but they will also shop for a variety of other things in the process. Not only do they explore and discover more for themselves, but they will also be shopping for other people as well.
If she is not rushed in life, my wife can relax as she goes shopping. Thinking in a caring and sharing kind of manner produces healthy oxytocin, which increases levels of relaxation.
If I tag along with her, I am done after about twenty minutes, while she stays energized. I am completely worn out. I rejoice when we go into a store and there is a chair for me to sit in while she is trying on dresses.
There is a big distinction here. Women's stores have chairs for husbands to sit in, men's stores don't have chairs for women to sit in. This is because women don't need to sit when their husbands are trying on clothes. Even the thought of him wearing something new excites her levels of energy and well being.
The activity of shopping, particularly if it includes shopping for others, is oxytocin-producing, which is a reward for a woman's body.
When a man shops with and for his wife, he will wear out because low testosterone results in low endorphins. When a woman shops with and for her husband, she will not wear out. Her higher oxytocin levels reward her with endorphins, and her low testosterone level doesn't reduce this high.
