Five Questions To Ask In A Real Marriage Proposal
By Bob and Cheryl Moeller
Twenty-seven years ago when I asked Cheryl if she would marry me, I missed the point.
Instead of posing the question "Will you marry me?" I should have asked "Will you be married to me?" The difference is more than semantic, it is significant.
Essentially the first question only asks, "Will you set a date, go through a ceremony, and sign a certificate with me?" The second asks, "Will you make a lifetime commitment to keep romance alive, to bear my burdens, to grow together in Christ, to show respect to me in front of others, and to work hard at keeping my dreams alive?"
That's a mouthful when you're down on one knee, but it comes closer to describing what a vital and growing marriage actually requires.
If you're like us and asked - or answered - the wrong questions, the good news is it's not too late to propose again, whether you're the husband or the wife. We developed the following five questions as a great second proposal.
1. Will you keep romance alive in our relationship for a lifetime?
2. Will you bear my burdens as I carry yours for a lifetime?
3. Will you promise to spend time with me to intentionally grow in Christ together?
4. Will you treat me with respect in front of your friends and family members as I do the same for you?
5. Will you work hard at keeping my dreams alive?
