Why do we get married?
Do we get married in order to find a convenient way to cook meals, wash dishes, do laundry, wash cars, and rear children?
I believe we get married out of a deep desire to know and to be known by another, to love and to be loved, to live life together, believing that together we could experience life more deeply than apart.
We got married believing we had an intimate relationship, believing we could make it grow, and hoping that we would keep it forever.
How does this lofty and sometimes ethereal goal become experiential in our real relationship?
It helps to take a deeper look at the five essential components of an intimate relationship.
1. Intellectual Intimacy - Sharing our thoughts.
2. Emotional intimacy - Discussing our feelings.
3. Social intimacy - Spending time with each other and talking about the time we spend apart.
4. Spiritual intimacy - We open our souls to each other.
5. Physical intimacy - We share our bodies.
It's good to talk about each of these in order to better understand and then maintain the intimacy of your marriage.
