Why Did God Make Sex?
By Gary Chapman
According to the Scriptures, human sexuality is for three purposes: (1) reproduction, (2) companionship, and (3) pleasure.
That is why God's guideline is that this physical joining of body and soul is to be experienced in the context of marriage.
Marriage is a life-long commitment between a man and woman. In this covenant relationship, we have sex with each other and in so doing, we become companions. As companions, perhaps we will give birth to children. Within this context of marital security, the children have the best possible environment in which to grow into responsible adults.
But companionship and reproduction are only two of God's purposes. The third purpose is pleasure.
Some Christians have trouble with the idea that God would want us to enjoy sex.
Their idea of God is that He is looking over the banister of heaven saying: "Anyone down there having fun, knock it off!"
But that is not the Biblical picture of God. God has done many things for our pleasure and sex is one of them.
Want to enhance your sexual pleasure in marriage? Read one chapter each week from the Song of Solomon. Better yet, read it to your spouse.
