Sex Is The Key To A Happy Retirement, Say Researchers

By Graeme Paton

Pensioners with an active sex life are significantly more likely to enjoy a happy retirement, according to new research.

Scientists said there was a direct link between the number of times over-65s had sex and their chances of a contented life and marriage.

According to figures, older people who engaged in sexual activity more than once a month were around 50 per cent more likely to describe themselves as "very happy" than those who were celibate for at least a year.

The conclusions - in a study by the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in the United States - come after Jane Fonda, the actress, attributed her youthful appearance to a continued healthy libido.

The 73-year-old devoted a chapter of her autobiography to bedroom advice for pensioners and admitted to taking testosterone hormones to help maintain her sexual appetite.

Adrienne Jackson, who led the latest research, said: "This study will help open the lines of communication and spark interest in developing 'outside the box' approaches to dealing with resolvable issues that limit or prevent older adults from participating in sexual activity.

"Highlighting the relationship between sex and happiness will help us in developing and organizing specific sexual health interventions for this growing segment of our population."

In the study, researchers surveyed 238 married people aged over 65 in the United States.

They found that the frequency of sexual activity was significantly linked with both general and marital happiness.

Almost 60 per cent who had sex more than once a month were "very happy" with their life in general, compared with just 40 per cent of those who had not done it for more than a year.

Similarly, 59 per cent who reported no sexual activity in the last 12 months were "very happy" with their marriage, as opposed to almost eight-in-10 who had sex more than once a month.

The association even remained after accounting for factors such as age, gender, health status and satisfaction with financial situation.

The study is the latest in a series of reports to link sex with a happy retirement.

Research by the University of California San Diego looked at women between the ages of 60 and 89 found those who enjoyed an active sex life had a better quality of life and were happier.

A report by Saga also found that the baby boomer generation was more satisfied with their appearance and sex lives than younger people.

Some 60 per cent said that they found sex more fulfilling after 50 than when they were in their 20s and 30s.
